Thai police may wear short sleeves to save energy: official

Thailand may allow its police officers to cool off by wearing a newshort-sleeve uniform, a move they hope will also help save energy atpolice stations, a spokesman said Saturday.

Thai policecurrently have only a brown, torso-hugging long-sleeve uniform thatthey wear even while directing traffic in Bangkok’s sweltering heat.

National police Chief Sereepisut Taemeeyaves has proposed a newlighter-weight khaki uniform that would have short sleeves to make itcooler for police on the street, spokesman Pongsapat Pongcharoen said.

Sereepisut also hopes the change would help police save energy andreduce greenhouse gas emissions by encouraging officers to turn downair conditioners at police stations, Pongsapat added.

"Wehave discussed changing to a new police uniform for a long time, tofind something more relaxed and suited to our climate," he said.

Approving a new uniform is a complicated and lengthy process, and willrequire the police commission to seek a change to the laws regulatingthe force, Pongsapat added.

Turkeys visit NY town for Thanksgiving

Fifteen wild turkeys strutted into a suburban hamlet of N.Y. on Thanksgiving Day and then left just in time to avoid dinner.

The turkeys showed up Thursday morning, drawing crowds of spectators, but left — marching in single file — at about 1 p.m.

Suffolk County police were called because the turkeys created atraffic hazard while crossing a road. But the officers didn’t have tointervene because the birds kept walking — and hadn’t been seen orheard from since, residents said Friday.

Resident JoyceLogan said there was nopractical joke involved and the turkeys may havewandered into the Long Island neighborhood about 40 miles east ofManhattan from a nearby wooded area, where she had been hearing gobblessince summer.

Logan said the birds walked away in a straightline between her house and her neighbor’s, and she went back inside toprepare a store-bought turkey dinner for her family.

Unlikesome neighbors, Logan said, she never had thoughts of catching one ofthe turkeys in her yard and turning it into dinner.

"I can’t eat something that I’ve met," she said.
