Welcome to module 4!
This module is all about choosing your domain name and getting WordPress installed.
Legal Issues With Domain Names
Now, there are differences of opinion when it comes to choosing domain names for specific products. Some people go by the philosophy that they can just register a specific product name, trademarks and brands included. They just wait for the company’s lawyer’s letter :-)
I don’t work that way. I don’t want to deal with legal issues, so I play it safe.
My method is to find a domain name you can register that is enough like the product, and contains related keywords, so that it’s still going to be beneficial for you.
Fictional Product Example
Say this is the product (fictional) we want to rank for:
Fusher Proce Amazing Frog Dancer X3042
I don’t want to register fisherpriceamazingfrogdancer.com, because that is going to be a legal issue.
I would register something like:
DancingFrogX3043.com
or
FrogX3043.com
or
AmazingFrogToy.com
Something along those lines. Model numbers, in general, don’t seem to be an issue in domain names. Use your own judgement on that, but I haven’t had any problems.
Try to get some keywords in there, model numbers…things that are very closely related to your product and its name without getting you into trouble.
With that said, I would still try to rank for the full product name.
So, even if my domain name was FrogX3043, I would try to rank for Amazing Frog Dancer X3043, or even Amazing Frog Dancer.
Install WordPress
After you’ve registered your domain name, you need to add it on to your server and install WordPress (I just use Fantastico).
We’ll cover what to do with that installation tomorrow, but at least you have the bare bones covered for now. |
