As I am in the uk, Is it pointless getting citations on US sites as a backlink or will it still have some value?


citations != backlinks.
    but since you're local, I don't see how you could get citations from the US... the forms on these websites are geared towards US sites: mandatory State field, no Country field, US phone...

    But maybe you're talking about backlinking strategies for a UK website instead of citations?

    Citations are "backlinks without the link", in other words the business name, address and phone.
