Welcome to module 12! This module is all about evaluating where your site is right now. This helps give you important information so you can figure out what your next steps are (if any).
There isn’t a video for this module. You’re going to be using the resources below to evaluate your site’s performance to date. Note that in these early stages your stats and rankings may change on a daily basis, soon enough things will settle down for you…hopefully on page 1 for a good long while!
Rank Checker: I use this free tool to check my rankings: http://tools.seobook.com/firefox/rank-checker/
It is a Firefox plugin, so you’ll need to be using the Firefox browser. It’s totally free, but the owner does have you opt-in to get it.
Alternatively, you can use Market Samurai (that is an affiliate link for a free trial, if you’re interested) to keep tabs on your rankings.
Whatever works best and easiest for you
Scroogle.org: As you may know, Google keeps tabs on your searches. They personalize your results based on things like location, previous searches, etc. You can turn this off to a certain extent using the settings in your account, but I prefer to use Scroogle instead.
Scroogle uses Google’s search function, but they strip away things like cookies, saved searches, etc. It can give you a more accurate picture of where your site is ranking for your targeted terms.
I use it by searching for my targeted term/phrase, then I see if my site is ranking. That’s it! It’s a manual, easy way to check your rankings if you prefer not to use one of the tools I’ve mentioned above.
Check your AWStats: If you go to your cPanel for your site, you’ll see that there is an icon labeled AWStats. Click on this to see traffic data for your site so far.
If you scroll down toward the bottom, you’ll see the keywords people have found your site through, using the search engines. This data is incredibly valuable. Not only can it give you a hint about your rankings for those terms (if many people found your site using term X, then you’re probably ranking highly for that term).
It can also help you out with ideas for terms to focus additional content around, if you decide to expand your site down the road.
Here are some terms my site has been found for at this point:
- GR-4N
- Cuisinart GR-4N
- Cuisnart GR-4N Griddler
- GR-4N Griddler
- Cuisinart GR-4N Griddler Sale
- Cuisinart GR-4N Price Comparison
Pretty cool!
Checking Your Amazon.com/Associates Account:
You’ve probably been checking this already, but there are some really cool things you can gather from your account. For one thing, you can determine if you are making sales already. You can also see how many people have clicked your affiliate link for this site! (Note: that is only the case if you set up your tracking ID for this site).
Look at your conversion rate.
Amazon gives you many valuable bits of data that you can sort through and analyze.
This does NOT mean that you need to sit there for hours on end analyzing stuff. Move on and build more sites! Look at this data to see if there are immediate changes you need to make. Look at this data to give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done!
But…this is about putting up high quality sites quickly. Don’t be a constant stat-checker, or you’ll never reach your goals. Build, build, build.
Later down the road (say, a month or so from now) you’ll want to check these figures again to see how things are going.
If you’re not ranking at that point, determine whether you need or want to write more content. If you are ranking but are not making sales, see what you can change to improve things (your theme, graphics, affiliate link placement, etc.).
If your site is going bananas and making all kinds of awesome sales, see what you can do to branch out — either add more content to hit more terms for this site or even create ANOTHER site targeting the same thing. You can also find another product that is similar to create a product around.
You can also create a “mother” site targeting several related products. That will be covered in the bonus module to this course
You’re doing a great job!
