There's a LOT of information, and more importantly, misinformation about search engine optimization. It's pretty easy to get into a heated debate over various search engine algorithm theories or experiences - mostly because a lot of it is guesswork and not based on actual data. Google, Yahoo, and Bing all keep their algorithms close to their chest - and actually (probably) change them on a regular/random basis (just to keep marketers like us from gaming them even more than we already do).

Basically - you can get away with more than you think you can... but then there's those instances where you hear that a business lost 100K in business due to lost traffic from google because they got caught trying to manipulate Google (usually by mass-spam promotion activities, ie. forum/blog spam). This actually happens more often then you think - and it's usually due to some company hiring a risky IM "specialist" that hired some team to "promote" their site, and their promotion technique was just to send 500K links using Xrumer - all to the root URL of the client's homepage. (obviously a no-no)

A few ideas about SEO algorithms:

1. Test.
2. Test some more.
3. Do some research - there are LOTS of resources that offer usable data (split-testing, before and after tests, what this did to someone's traffic, how this one change affected their rank, etc). I'll list some resources in this forum soon.
4. Ask about it here - That's what we're here for... I've tried a LOT of tactics, and have read a lot of data on the subject - as will other members no doubtedly have.
5. And remember - if you aren't testing, you're just guessing... and even with years of tests - you're still at best having educated guesses - since SE's algorithms are dynamic, ever changing... but keeping up with the changes can mean increased visibility, and ultimately, increased profits...

It's true that SEO is mostly about links, however there is a lot of other aspects to SEO - like on-page seo, link velocity, domain age, 301 redirects, keyword data, competition analysis, backlink analysis, indexing, local search, page rank, keyword density, LSI, page rank sculpting via obfuscated JS, site analytics affecting rank and much, much more.

We'll be going through all these topics in this forum.
